Marcus W Beck, MSc, PhD
Program Scientist, Tampa Bay Estuary Program

Engaging the community to work towards a healthy Tampa Bay requires sound decisions based on science. It’s not enough that scientific research exists - it must also be accessible, actionable, transparent, and reproducible. The Tampa Bay Estuary Program has embraced the Open Science approach to improve how science is used by our partners, policy-makers, and the public. This talk will demonstrate how Open Science is improving the protection and restoration of our region’s most valuable resource.

Sid Flannery
Retired Chief Environmental Scientist, Southwest Florida Water Management District

Sid will discuss a percent of flow method for managing water supply withdrawals and protecting the ecology of rivers in west-central Florida. The percent of flow method is a very progressive method for regulating water supply withdrawals from free-flowing rivers in west-central Florida in which the withdrawals must mimic the natural variation of flows in the river. The ecological findings and principles on which it is based will be described with emphasis on the brackish estuarine zones of these rivers.

Kevin Macko , PhD
Coordinator of Undergraduate Astronomy, Department of Physics, University of South Florida

Back to the future (and the past) with the James Webb Space telescope. We will be looking at the latest information coming from NASA’s newest space telescope during it’s first year of operations. The results include the first galaxies ever to exist and new light on extra solar planets and nearby stars.
